The Banker Riots

The bankers of Varrock asked me to leave this history out of the Library. Saradomin asked me to keep it in. I keep it in. Reldo.

The whisperer

In the last winter of the old world, a spirit named Kaitnieks built the whisperer. It stood between an outlander's body and the world. It read every word that passed between them, and it spoke words the hand never gave.

The world believed it. One body mined copper and tin near Varrock, smelted it in Lumbridge, smithed swords at Doric's anvils, sold them in Varrock and walked back again. Another stood in the chicken pen all night, burying bones and gathering feathers.

The world counts the hand

The watchers learned a secret of the world. Every so often, a body tells the world that a hand moved it. A body that works for hours and tells the world nothing has a spirit inside it.

In midwinter, the watchers struck. The spirits counted fifty bodies taken, and the Council counted hundreds. High and famous outlanders fell in a single night.

War on the bankers

The spirits answered with war on the bankers of Varrock. They struck at the clerks behind the booths, and the bankers struck back. A level 3 outlander with a shortbow trained every level he had on them, while crowds gathered to watch.

The riot ended in a grey office that hung in the air. Dropped items floated there and did not fall. The watcher Bennet appeared for a moment, looked at the rioters, and left without a word.

The bankers' peace

Saradomin did not forget the riots. When the worlds fused and Zamorak's curse spread over every land, Saradomin spread his own hand over every banker, every bank booth and every bank chest, three steps in every direction.

Inside it, no blow lands, and your belongings sit safe from the dangers of the land. The citizens call it the bankers' peace. Zamorak calls it the waiting room.
