Letters #46 - Zamorak Blazes a Trail
Zamorak Blazes a Trail

The gods have started holding trials, and the lord of chaos insists he won both. He explains the Twisting and the Trailblaze, comforts a barbarian who was not chosen, and answers two letters about bad dreams.
Hail, followers of darkness. My brothers and I have found a new way to quarrel without breaking the treaty. We pick champions, set them loose on a corner of the world, and see whose champion does best. Guthix calls it a trial. I call it a game I keep winning.
Zamorak, the travellers in my inn talk of nothing but the trials. One says the paths of Kourend bent and twisted around the champions. Another says the champions blazed trails through lands of their choosing, and the lands they skipped stayed shut. What were these trials?
The Bartender of the Jolly Boar Inn
Both are true. In the first, the Twisting, we held the champions in Great Kourend and bent its roads around them until they knew every stone. In the second, the Trailblaze, each champion chose the regions to blaze through, and the rest of the world stayed closed to them.
Each trial granted relics, powers that bend the rules of the land. My brothers argue over who won. I do not argue. I simply announce it: me.
Zamorak, the gods chose their champions, and none of them chose me. I am the bravest warrior in Barbarian Village. I once smashed one of your temples. Why was I not picked?
Gunthor the Brave, chieftain of Barbarian Village
Because you smashed one of my temples, Gunthor. I have a long memory and a short temper.
Also, champions must read the trial's rules, and I have seen your letters. Keep smashing things. It suits you.
Dark lord, the sisters of Slepe guard a sleeping horror under our chapel. It feeds on dreams, and the sleepers of Morytania wake screaming. Now the travellers go down to fight it in its own dream, in groups and alone. Is this wise?
A Sister of the Sisterhood, of Slepe
Wise? Nobody fights The Nightmare because it is wise. They fight it because it is there, and it is horrible, and they want to see what it drops.
Those who face its harder form alone say it strikes in fixed sets of three, the same three, every time. They say it as if they had watched it a thousand times. Perhaps they have.
Zamorak, I sold dreams of old battles for years, a few coins a nap. Since the fusion, the dreams will not stay in the bottle. Old foes stand in the fields north of Yanille now, wide awake, and the travellers fight them in broad daylight. Am I responsible?
Dominic Onion, of Yanille
Entirely. I could not be prouder. You sold dreams, and the dreams spilled out. Now Yanille has a field of nightmares, and you have no refunds to give.
Strength through chaos,
Zamorak
