Letters #47 - Guthix and the Devourer
Guthix and the Devourer

A goddess of the desert writes to the god of balance, and she is hungry. Guthix answers her, then turns to a storm off the coast and a trial that broke into pieces.
Greetings, mortals. The desert's deep south hath opened its tombs, and the one inside them hath found a quill. I print her letter because thou shouldst know what waits there.
Guthix, eldest. Your fusion broke my seals and opened my tombs to the sun. Now mortals walk my halls in little bands, taking my treasures and my patience. I was a goddess of rebirth once. I am the Devourer now. Every soul that enters my tombs feeds me. Send more.
Amascut, of the Tombs of Amascut
I send no one, Amascut. They go of their own will, as all mortals do. Some of them come back. Thou didst not count on that.
Thou wast rebirth, and thou hast become hunger. The balance hath room for both, but not for either alone. Tumeken and Elidinis know thy name. Be careful whom thou wakest.
Lord Guthix, the travellers pass my gate in great numbers now, all heading south into the deep desert to the new tombs. Only half of them buy a pass back. Should I sell more one-way tickets?
Shantay, of the Shantay Pass
Sell them water. The desert taketh more lives than the tombs do, and a full waterskin is the finest blessing a mortal can carry south.
Great Guthix, a storm spirit lives off our cove, and it hurls waves and lightning at the fishing boats. The travellers fight it with harpoons and buckets, and they bring back more fish than they ever caught in calm water. I sail them out every day. Should I stop?
Captain Dudi, of Tempoross Cove
Tempoross is the sea's temper, and the sea hath ever been generous to those who stand up to it. Do not stop. Only count thy sailors each evening.
Guthix, I found a shard of glowing stone in my thingummywut. The travellers say a trial of the gods broke its relics into fragments, and the champions gathered them by every art they knew. Should I give mine back? I cannot remember whose it is.
Wizard Traiborn, of the Wizards' Tower
Keep it, good wizard. That was the Shattering. Mine brothers and I broke the relics on purpose, to see which champions would gather the most pieces. The pieces scattered further than we planned.
Thy thingummywut is as safe a place as any. Nobody else knows what it is either.
In balance,
Guthix
